Forget Spreadsheets

As someone who enjoys a good craft beer every now and then, I used to keep all the brews I tried in a spreadsheet. But hey, this is the 21st century! I built My Beer Shelf from scratch with Ruby on Rails, a web application framework perfect for fast, agile development.

In addition to adding any flavor from the database of 3,500+ brews to their shelf (or adding more records when they try something totally new), users have quite a few innovative features at their disposal.

Location, Location, Location

I combined Foursquare and Google Maps to make My Beer Shelf all about location. Users can geotag their drinks at any Foursquare venue and see their history all mapped out. And when someone's trying to track down some obscure brew, they can head to the Goole Maps API interface to search for others who've tried that flavor nearby.

Cross-Platform Mobile Access

While native apps may certainly be in the site's future, I knew it would be important to make the site immediately available on all smartphones. Beer tracking and mapping is possible on any modern device with a web browser thanks to a version of the site built on jQuery Mobile.
